Gary Neville’s Valencia failure
Gary Neville’s first stint as a coach wasn’t the most successful one.
To the complete shock of the football world, the Manchester United legend was given the Valencia job by Peter Lim last season, despite having zero managerial experience.
Neville’s only experience at that point was as a coach with Roy Hodgson’s England; he’d never been a ‘number 1′ and it was astonishing to see such an inexperienced man be fast-tracked into such a big job.
Neville accepted the job, leaving his cushy role as Sky Sports’ chief football pundit to take over the reins at Mestalla, and it went about as well as you’d expect for such an inexperienced coach.
The Mancunian never looked comfortable in the role, and the language barrier didn’t help.
He was sacked just a few months later, with Valencia languishing in the bottom half of the table.
Ex-President doesn’t even know his name
Things aren’t going much better this year, and Valencia look in serious threat of being relegated.
Speaking on La Sexta TV show Jugones last night, ex-Valencia President Paco Roig was mercilessly critical of Gary Neville, labelling him as ‘the worst coach ever.’
In fact, he thinks so little of Neville’s managerial capabilities that he doesn’t even know his name, referring to him as ‘the English pundit.’
Either that or he wanted it to seem that way.
